Frequently asked questions

Q: What does the "low carbon (canvas only)" shipping option mean?

A: If this option is selected the painting will be removed from the box frame and rolled in a cardboard shipping tube. This makes the parcel lighter, smaller and can therefore be sent cheaper and with a lower carbon footprint than on the ready to hang box frame. This option is particularly suitable if you intend to get the art professionally framed yourself.

Q: Do the paintings need an exterior glass frame?

A: No, they are ready to hang on the box frame as they are (unless the 'canvas only' shipping option is selected - see above). The paintings are oil and can be wiped clean. Also, traditionally oil paintings are not mounted behind glass so that the glossy nature of the paint can be seen. However, they are stretched and ready to place in to an exterior frame if desired.

Q: Will the paint fade?

A: No. The paint used is locally available (in Africa) and lead free oil paint, usually used for boats and bicycles. As it is this durable type of paint it will last for a very long time

Q: Where should I hang my painting?

A: In order to preserve the shape of the canvas, do not hang the paintings near a direct source of heat (like above a radiator) or in a room that is damp. Both of these cases may cause the canvas to warp.

Q: Do the paintings have a large carbon foot print?

A: Although the paintings have travelled by air from Africa, they are shipped as a rolled canvas. This means that we are able to fit many more paintings by volume and weight. Therefore the paintings are stretched on to the box frame in the UK for this purpose.

Q: Why are the names of the paintings in Swahili?

A: Swahili is the national language of Kenya and a generic language throughout east African countries

Q: What is donated to the Rainbow Orphanage/School/Hospital?

A: For each painting the donation is different. Every donation is equal to the price at which we purchase the painting from the artist. So we effectively pay double for each painting. The price of each painting is directly proportional to the size and complexity of the painting. The donation is made to Rainbow at the time of shipment from Kenya.
